When The Sky Splits Open
The Second Coming

Horatius Bonar

A.W. Tozer

Was a prophetic pastor and author who called believers to deep, uncompromising intimacy with God

double-quotes

“When He returns, it will not be to bear a cross, but to wield a sword. He will come not to be judged, but to judge. Woe to those who are at ease in Zion when the King appears.”
A.W. Tozer

The Sky Splits

The wind had gone still. The sun had dimmed. And then... the sky tore apart.

Not a cloud gently parting, not a sunset shift in the weather, but a rending—like the heavens themselves could no longer hold back what they were hiding. Every man, every woman, every child on earth will look up. Some with awe, others with terror. Because this isn’t a story. It’s not symbolism. It’s not metaphor.

It’s coming.

And many—many—will not be ready.

Jesus Christ is not coming back as a baby in a manger.

He’s coming back as a King with fire in His eyes.

And I want to ask you today: What will you be doing when the sky splits open?

Matthew 24:29–31

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man... and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He will send out His angels... and they will gather His elect.”

REVELATION & UNFOLDING

This isn’t some fringe doctrine. This is not the back pages of your Bible. This is Jesus Christ Himself speaking to His disciples about His return. And I’m convinced… many in the Church today are asleep at the wheel. Preaching comfort, not conviction. Culture, not Christ.

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is the climax of history. It is the blessed hope of the Church. And it is also the most terrifying day the world has ever seen.

Let me be clear: this is not a hidden doctrine buried in coded mystery. It’s not something for late-night YouTube channels with scary music and blurry graphics. This is central to our faith. And friend, if you believe Jesus came once, you better believe He is coming again.

SIGNS IN THE SKY

Jesus says, “Immediately after the tribulation…” That means it comes suddenly. After a time of great trial—chaos, persecution, false teachers, apostasy—then the heavens shift.

The sun goes dark.
The moon goes black.
The stars fall.
And the powers of heaven are shaken.

Can you imagine it?

Try to feel the weight of that moment. Picture being outside on an ordinary afternoon, and the light fades—not like sunset—but like the sun itself has turned its face away. Birds stop singing. Earthquakes begin. Phones stop working. Everything grinds to a halt.

And then…

A sign appears. Not a hashtag. Not a notification.

The Son of Man appears in the sky.

THE DIVINE REVEAL

Revelation 1:7 says, “Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him…”

Every dictator, every atheist, every lukewarm churchgoer, every distracted teenager, every soul who ever said “later,”—every eye.

Can you imagine the saints rising from graves across every continent? Angels rushing from the four winds? Can you feel the trembling in your bones if you’re not ready?

For those in Christ, it’s glory.

For those without Him… it’s horror.

There is no more time to pretend. No more time to delay. No more time to “find yourself” or “live your truth.”

Only one Truth will matter: Did you know Him?

PATTERNS OF JUDGMENT AND RESCUE

God has a pattern.

Noah preached for 120 years. And then came the flood.
Lot warned his family. Then came the fire.
The prophets warned Israel. Then came Babylon.
Jesus warned Jerusalem. Then came Rome.
He warns us now. And next… comes the King.

God always sends a word before He sends the whirlwind.

He always sends a warning before the wrath.

Friend, you are hearing the warning right now.

THE EARLY CHURCH LONGED FOR HIS COMING

The early Church lived with an ache for His return. The apostles wrote with urgency.

Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 5:2, “The day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.”

The Didache, one of the earliest Christian writings outside the Bible, ends with the cry: “Let grace come, and let this world pass away. Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!”

They suffered, bled, and died believing Jesus could return any moment.

Now we live in comfort, distraction, and spiritual dullness… assuming He’ll take His time.

Why?

Because our hearts are more focused on the world that is passing than the Kingdom that is coming.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?

Let me speak plainly:

  1. You must live ready.
Jesus said in Matthew 24:44, “You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
That means no secret sins. No hidden compartments. No “I’ll get serious later.”
What would change if you knew Jesus was returning tonight? Then do that now.

  2. You must warn others.
Ezekiel 33 says the watchman who sees the sword coming and doesn’t sound the alarm is guilty of blood.
Some of you have loved ones on the brink of hell, and you haven’t said a word.
This is not the hour to be silent. Speak the truth—with urgency and love.

  3. You must set your heart on eternity.
Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your minds on things above, not on things that are on earth.”
Live like this world isn’t your home. Stop being intoxicated by entertainment, money, comfort. You were not saved to blend in. You were saved to shine.

A TRUE STORY FROM HISTORY

On January 26, 1700, an earthquake struck the Pacific Northwest with such power that entire forests dropped into the sea. Native tribes had legends of the “night the earth swallowed the moon.” Villages were swept away.

But what’s chilling is this:

There was no warning.

In the silence of a normal night, the plates shifted, and the world changed forever.

Friend, that’s a dim reflection of the Day of the Lord. People will be marrying, working, scrolling, and posting… and then the sky will split.

This is not mythology. This is prophesied reality.

And it’s closer than we think.

A WARNING FOR THE CHURCH

There will be false believers in church pews that day.

Jesus said in Matthew 7:22–23, “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord’… and I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you.’”

Don’t just attend church. Don’t just post Bible verses.

Know Him.

Be found in Him. Love Him. Obey Him. Treasure Him.

The Second Coming is not just about information. It’s about intimacy.

THE GREAT DIVIDE: GLORY OR DREAD

When He comes, there will be no middle ground.

You will either rejoice, or you will run.

You will either lift your hands in praise or raise your fists in regret.

And when the books are opened, your eternal fate will not be based on your intentions or your church attendance

…but on whether your name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

Is it?

YOU ONLY HAVE ONE

Church, it’s time to awaken.

Stop clinging to a world that is already groaning for His return. Stop chasing pleasures that will melt in the heat of His glory. Stop flirting with sin while the Bridegroom is preparing His return.

You’ve got one life. One shot. One window before the sky splits.

Live like you’re going to see Him. Because you are.

CLOSING PRAYER

Father,

We tremble at Your Word. We tremble at the thought of that great and terrible Day. We ask You to shake us now so we won’t be shaken then.

Forgive us for our slumber. Forgive us for trading eternal glory for momentary comfort.

Awaken our hearts, Lord. Set our eyes on the clouds. Let the cry of “Maranatha” be more than words—it’s our longing.

Prepare us for Your coming. Burn away everything false in us. Purify Your Bride. And may we be found faithful when You appear.

In the mighty, glorious, soon-returning name of Jesus Christ we pray,
Amen.

BOLD FINAL CHALLENGE

You’ve been warned.

Now choose.

You can keep living as if the sky will never split… or you can rise, repent, and run toward your King.

Because one day, perhaps sooner than we think… the trumpet will sound. The clouds will roll back.

And your eyes will meet His.

Be ready.
